Equation Solving

Definition

Equation solving is the process of finding the value(s) of a variable that make a mathematical statement (equality) true.

Why It Matters

Equation solving is the process of narrowing the possibility space of a variable until only the truth remains, transforming a balanced “scale” of logic into a specific solution. It is the fundamental tool for identifying equilibrium points in economics, stresses in engineering, and the unknown parameters of the physical laws that govern our world.

Core Concepts

  • The Golden Rule: Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other to maintain equality.
  • Inverse Operations: Using addition to undo subtraction, multiplication to undo division, etc.
  • Isolation: The goal of moving all terms involving the variable to one side and constants to the other.
