Definition
Counterinsurgency (COIN) is a strategy designed to combat unconventional or “asymmetric” warfare. It focuses on winning the support of the environment (the population) rather than just destroying the enemy forces.
Why It Matters
In complex social systems, brute force often creates more resistance than it eliminates; COIN teaches that long-term stability is achieved by fixing the underlying “ecosystem”—aligning incentives and building trust—so that the “virus” of insurgency loses its niche.
