Connectome

Definition

A connectome is a comprehensive, high-resolution map of the neural connections within an organism’s nervous system. It represents the “wiring diagram” of the brain, detailing how individual neurons or brain regions are physically and functionally linked.

Why It Matters

It posits that the ‘hardware’ of the brain’s physical connections is the fundamental source of the ‘software’ of the mind and intelligence.

Core Concepts

  • Scales of Mapping:
    • Macro-scale: Mapping connections between major brain regions (white matter tracts).
    • Meso-scale: Mapping circuits at the level of neuronal populations.
    • Micro-scale: Mapping individual synaptic connections (the most granular level).
  • Structural vs. Functional Connectivity: Structural connectivity refers to the physical anatomical links, while functional connectivity describes the statistical dependencies (correlations) between the activities of different regions.
  • Connectomics: The field of study dedicated to generating and analyzing connectomes, utilizing advanced imaging techniques like Electron Microscopy (EM) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI).
