Conformity

Definition

Conformity is the tendency of individuals to align their behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes with those of a group, often at the expense of their own judgment or preferences.

Why It Matters

While useful for social cohesion, it can lead to ‘groupthink’ where individuals suppress correct observations to avoid social friction.

Core Concepts

  • Social Proof: Using the behavior of others as a cue for correct action.
  • Norm Enforcement: Groups punish deviation.
  • Informational vs Normative Influence: Conforming because others seem to know better, or to gain acceptance.
