Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship

Definition

An ocean-going landing platform (retrofitted barge) used by SpaceX to recover Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy first stages when missions lack the propellant margin to return to the launch site.

Why It Matters

It is the key to rocket reusability, allowing for recovery even when a mission is too fast to return to land. By bringing the pad to the rocket, SpaceX radically increased payload capacity while still saving the vehicle.

  • Strategic Necessity: Most orbital launches require high Horizontal Velocity. Returning to land (RTLS) requires a “boostback” burn that uses significant fuel. Landing downrange on a drone ship saves this fuel, increasing the rocket’s payload capacity.
  • Naming Convention: Named after starships in Iain M. Banks’ Culture series (e.g., Just Read the Instructions, Of Course I Still Love You).
  • Precision Station-Keeping: Uses GPS and powerful thrusters to hold a position at sea within an accuracy of 3 feet, even in high swells.
  • Retrofitting: Built from standard deck barges (like the Marmac 300) with added “wings” for extra width and blast-protection for onboard electronics.
